Building Compliance: What Standards Are Right For You?

Compliance standards outline industry best practices, whether they be in quality management, information security or health and safety. With thousands of increasingly high standards placed on businesses and service providers, the need for compliance in high-risk industries like construction is becoming more critical.

Compliance Council is one of Australia’s leading compliance consultants, specialising in assisting construction businesses to meet industry standards and gain compliance certification. Let’s look into four of the standards that the Compliance Council recommends for businesses in the construction industry.

ISO 9001:2015

ISO 9001 is the international standard for quality management. Quality Management Systems (QMS) are policies and documented procedures in place to communicate and inform how a company delivers its products to customers. The ISO 9001 standard ensures that a business’ operations are designed to deliver consistent quality, and also lays the foundations for continuous business improvement.

The standard helps organisations meet the needs and expectations of its customers, improves business processes, saves money, and increases profit. Certification to ISO 9001 is often a prerequisite for construction companies to tender for government projects.

If your business is currently certified to ISO 9001:2013, you will need to update your certification to the revised ISO 9001:2015 standard.

AS/NZS 4801

AS/NZS 4801 is a standard set to assess a company’s Occupational Health & Safety Management systems. It is regarded as the benchmark to which organisations can develop and implement policies and objectives to inform, educate, and control health and safety risks present in the workplace. Due to the dangerous nature of the construction industry, it is particularly important to become AS/NZS 4801 certified.

Not only does the standard protect the health and safety of your employees; it also sets a precedent to encourage safety culture, enhance your company’s reputation, and reduce absence due to workplace injuries, illnesses, and incidents. Furthermore, failure to maintain the correct standard in occupational health and safety can put your business at legal and financial risk.

ISO 14001

The ISO 14001 standard is concerned with managing a company’s environmental responsibilities. The most recent version of the standard, ISO 14001:2015, outlines an environmental management system based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle.

Plan: establish objectives and processes necessary to deliver results in accordance with the organisation’s policy.

Do: implement the processes.

Check: monitor and measure processes against the policy, objectives, targets, legal and other requirements, and report the results.

Act: take action to continually improve performance of the management system.

Becoming compliant with ISO 14001 demonstrates your commitment to eco-friendly construction. Environmentally conscious clients view ISO 14001-certified businesses favourably within the industry.

ISO 27001

With cyber threats on the rise, effective Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) are increasingly critical for all Australian businesses. The ISO 27001 standard helps organisations properly manage its ISMS and keep financial information, intellectual property, and private employees or customer details safe and secure.

Hackers, cyber criminals, and data leaks are all potential threats to Australian businesses, and can have lasting reputational, financial, and legal effects. The ISO 27001 standard helps organisations keep their information assets secure. This may be achieved by training staff on security threats, creating secure processes and IT systems, and minimising risk through effective security controls.
