Microsoft rolled the dice last year by offering Windows 7 and 8.1 users a free upgrade to Windows 10 – a smart move that’s paying off.
Over 300 million users have downloaded the free upgrade in under 10 months; with Microsoft’s target of 1 billion users by 2017/18 well within sight.
According to CNET, Windows 10 combines the “best bits of old and new Windows features into a cohesive package”, with PC Advisor going one step further, claiming Windows 10 is “the best yet”.
If you’re still running Windows 7 or 8.1, you probably have good and well-intentioned reasons for not making the upgrade. And you mightn’t know the free upgrade has a limited shelf life.
So upgrading now might just be worth it, especially before July 29 when Microsoft take their offer of free upgrades off the table. There are some reasons why:
Upgrading your operating system will cost you
By shunning Microsoft’s offer of a free upgrade, you can expect to pay more to upgrade to Windows 10 after July 29. Here’s the current cost structure for purchasing Windows 10 outright, per machine:
Who knows if these costs will increase - or decrease - after July 29. That might hinge on the success of an expected last-minute uptake of free upgrades.
Older operating systems won’t be supported forever
Microsoft will continue issuing security patches and online technical assistance for Windows 7 and 8.1, but they’ve put firm deadlines around the conclusion of support for these systems. That puts all your software, hardware and data at risk to harmful viruses, spyware and other malicious software. What cost do you put on losses of this scale to yourself and your business?
Application-based software you use will be developed with newer operating systems in mind
The cost of developing and supporting application software for older operating systems is high, especially when support shifts to newer operating systems like Windows 10.
